Joseph Thors was a 19th century painter of landscapes who exhibited his works with great success at the Royal Academy, the Royal Institute and the Society of British Artists at Suffolk Street, London. His landscape paintings are usually rustic scenes with winding paths, cottages, figures and animals, painted in a style which derives ultimately from the Norwich School of artists.

He also exhibited in Birmingham between 1869 and 1900. He is now regarded as a member of the Birmingham School of Painters who flourished in the latter half of the 19th century. It is also known the he travelled to France and lived for a while in the area around Fountainebleau in 1878.

The Cleveland Museum of Art;
The Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco;
The Victoria and Albert Museum, London;
The Bristol Museum and many other private and public collections.

He exhibited at various locations between 1863 and 1900 at:

The Royal Society of Artists, Birmingham - 17 times;
The Royal Society of British Artists - 15 times;
The Royal Academy - 6 times;
The Royal Institute of Oil Painters - Once.

Joseph Thors is an artist who for years has inspired the imagination fo people who like to dwell for a moment on the rustic charm and even hardship of our Victorian period. It is not surprising that prices for his works have risen considerably and will continue to do so.
